Joan Sangenis’ family has been making bulk wine at home for at least eight generations in the cellar of Cal Pla, a house that’s mentioned in documents dating back to 1814. But it wasn’t until 1996 that Joan, upon finishing his enology studies, decided to expand the family cellar with a modern winery facility. On the same year, they switched to producing bottled wines and eventually joining the DOQ Priorat appellation.
Despite all the hardships that village life has set upon the inhabitants of Porrera (including a phylloxera plague that devastated the region in the 19th century), Joan’s family has managed to continue production throughout the centuries,. They currently produce about 80,000 bottles a year the majority of which are red wines, but they also make a white and even a rosé.
